With special guest ADI SHAKTI

(American Tribal Style/World Fusion Bellydance) opening!

Adi Shakti Bio

We are a group of ten women from Madison County in Central New York State ranging in age from our 20’s to our 60’s.

Our dance style is called American Tribal Style/World Fusion Bellydance. This style traces its origins to the ritual dances of pre-Christian Judaic tribeswomen, dances which were performed by women and for women, usually to encourage and honor a woman in labor. Over the centuries, as trade routes developed, these dances picked up influences from the Far East to North Africa. Through the millennia, many indigenous peoples kept ritual dance alive through local cultural and/or religious customs.

During the 1980’s, a purely American phenomenon emerged and came to be known as American Tribal Style Bellydance. While not a pure ethnic dance form, American Tribal Style has been described as ethnically-inspired, drawing on a multitude of cultures, customs, and spiritual practices. This dance has continued to evolve, and there are now as many variations on the original tribal style as one can imagine. The common thread uniting all tribal dancers, however, is empowerment of the feminine spirit!

The name, Adi Shakti, derives from the Sanskrit to describe the concept of the all-encompassing, omnipresent divine feminine—that energy which is creative, evolutionary—the life energy. We strive to honor and convey this energy through performing our interpretation of this ancient dance.

Adams is quite marvelous. This is a fascinating exploration of a woman’s illusions and delusions, marriage and divorce, sexuality and duality, mother- hood and sisterhood, feminism and dynamism. It’s witty, wise, revealing, insightful, painful and totally engrossing. You couldn’t spend a better evening in the theater. – PARK LABREA NEWS

An engrossing, in-your-face female perspective on growing older amid society’s misguided expectations. Richly written and skillfully brought to life, this production does not berate society for its wrongs. Instead, it gives males insight (and even some identifycation), and allows females to chuckle and nod in agreement. – DAILY VARIETY

Written & Performed by Lynne Adams (star of Guiding Light)
Directed by Brooke Adams (Days of Heaven, Invasion of the Body Snatchers)
[Originally produced by Tony Shalhoub (Emmy Award Winner, MONK)]
